Basic Needs

The United Way of DeKalb County supports local programs that ensure people have enough food, shelter and clothing as they strive for a better life.

Your contribution has allowed us to provide funding to these United Way Partner Agency programs in 2014 that provided basic needs for struggling families:

  • DeKalb County Council on Aging: DART Transportation Program provided over 26,633 one way trips to over 1,000 residents of DeKalb County in 2015. Specialized vehicles make traveling accessible for seniors, disabled and others of all ages.
  • RSVP's Community Center of Care Food Bank provided 19,865 individuals with food from the food pantry who represented  families. A total of 19,865 individuals were served during 2015. The RSVP volunteer program had over 425 active volunteers who contributed approximately 60,000 hours of service last year.

2016 Power of the Purse Grants impacted the community through these services:

  • Boomerang Backpacks, Inc.  used POP funds specifically for food supplies for DeKalb County schools.  Boomerang Backpacks will pack an estimated 450 backpacks to elementary students in DeKalb County for 30 weekends during the school year.
  • DeKalb Pregnancy Center  used POP funds to make available cribs, mattresses, and car seats to families who participate in the Helping Hands Program.
