What is 2-1-1 and where is it available?
2-1-1 is a national dialing code for health and human service information and referral. 2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember number that helps connect individuals and families to community-based organizations. Today, 2-1-1 reaches approximately 91 percent of the U.S. population, covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.  United Way 211 is one of eight regional Indiana 211 Centers that provide 2-1-1 service to Hoosiers in all 92 counties.  United Way 211 is the regional Center for Adams, Allen, Blackford, DeKalb, Elkhart, Fulton, Grant, Huntington, Jay, Kosciusko, Lagrange, LaPorte, Marshall, Noble, Steuben, St. Joseph, Wabash, Wells, and Whitley counties.

Why 2-1-1?
2-1-1 is easy to use and helps track gaps, duplication and trends in social services. 2-1-1 is essential in disaster relief, helping reduce non-emergency calls to 911 by connecting victims, donors and volunteers disaster resources. 2-1-1 can also be good for business because it helps employees through crises. United Way 2-1-1 Service also constantly updates a database of nearly 4,000 services available throughout the region.

Are there charges for calling 2-1-1?
There are no charges for calls from landline phones; calls are free from most pay phones. However, normal usage minutes and taxes apply to cell phone users.

How is 2-1-1 funded?
Most IN211 Centers currently are funded privately-through local United Ways, community foundations, and other donors. A few receive some funding from local government. As a public-private partnership, IN211 seeks to leverage the private philanthropic funding with State and Federal funding. Public funding is needed to augment local efforts to ensure that all Hoosiers have access to 2-1-1. Your United Way gift helps support this critical service.

How many people use 2-1-1?
In 2014, over 49,000 calls were answered from residents of northern Indiana. Most of the calls were related to basic needs like food, clothing, shelter, and financial assistance for rent and utilities.

Why can’t I dial 2-1-1?
Telephones that are not yet programmed for 2-1-1 will produce either a “fast busy” or a “not in service” recording. If you hear either of these please use our toll free number 1-877-502-0700 or visit our website, www.MyUnitedWay2-1-1.org.
